Hayden Panettiere, “Heroes” and “Nashville” Star, Dies at 36

Hayden Panettiere spent practically her entire life in front of the camera. After becoming an actress as a child, she eventually became one of the most recognizable young stars in TV and movies, first as Claire Bennet on NBC’s “Heroes,” and later as Juliette Barnes on ABC’s (and later CMT’s) “Nashville.”

Late Sunday night, Panettiere’s family confirmed that the actress had passed away at only 36 years of age. Her father, Skip Panettiere, described his daughter as an "incredible light" and a "force of nature" while asking for privacy as the family grieves. The cause of death has not been publicly disclosed.

A Career That Began in Childhood

While many people attribute the launch of Panettiere’s career to her work in “Remember the Titans,” alongside Denzel Washington, her on-screen debut actually came much earlier. She appeared in commercials as an infant and began taking on television roles as a young child, including appearances on “One Life to Live” and “Guiding Light.”

At 10 years old, she landed a role in “Remember the Titans,” a role that earned her widespread praise from critics and fans alike. Her work in “Remember the Titans” quickly landed her roles in “Raising Helen,” “Ice Princess,” and “Bring It On: All or Nothing.” By the time she reached her teens, Panettiere had already built an impressive resume.

“Heroes” Made Her a Household Name

While she was already popular, Panettiere became a household name in 2006 when she landed the role of Claire Bennet on “Heroes.” Claire was a high school cheerleader with an extraordinary ability to heal from injuries, and the character quickly became one of the show's most recognizable figures. The series became a major television phenomenon, and Panettiere's performance helped establish her as a star.

According to insiders, Claire Bennet was initially not slated to become a major character on the show. However, Panettiere’s performance and the character’s popularity forced writers and showrunners to reconsider their original plans. For a generation of television viewers, Panettiere became inseparable from the image of Claire Bennet.

“Nashville” Showed Another Level of Her Talent

Following the end of “Heroes,” Panettiere scored another major network TV role as Juliette Barnes in ABC’s “Nashville.” Juliette was a talented but troubled country music star whose professional ambition and complicated personal life became central to the series. Many years later, Panettiere said that she often felt as though writers used some of her real-life struggles as storylines for her character.

“Nashville” became a massive TV hit, thanks largely to the original songs that were written for the characters on the show. Performing these songs allowed Hayden Panettiere to put her vocal abilities on full display. She would go on to record albums and tour. Her performance earned her two Golden Globe nominations for Best Supporting Actress in a series, miniseries or television film. During filming, Panettiere fell in love with the city of Nashville, which resulted in her purchasing a home near the city where the show was filmed.

She Also Became Part of the “Scream” Franchise

While Barnes rose to fame on TV, her success wasn’t limited to the small screen. She played Kirby Reed in the Scream franchise, first appearing in “Scream 4” in 2011. The character became a fan favorite, and Panettiere later returned to the role for “Scream VI” more than a decade after her original appearance.

In addition to her cinematic roles, she provided her voice to multiple animated characters, including Dot in “A Bug’s Life” and Kate in “Scooby-Doo and the Goblin King.” She also provided some voice acting in the video game “Until Dawn.”

Panettiere Had Recently Begun a New Chapter

Hayden Panettiere’s death came at a significant period in her life and career. In May 2026, Panettiere released her memoir, “This Is Me: A Reckoning,” in which she discussed deeply personal experiences involving her career, relationships, addiction, postpartum depression and domestic abuse. The book allowed her to discuss parts of her life that had previously been heavily covered through tabloids and public speculation.

Panettiere's death at 36 represents the loss of an actress whose career had already lasted more than 30 years. Panettiere’s career arc, which started as an infant in commercials before landing roles in major motion picture franchises, serves as a testament to her talent.

In the months leading up to her death, Panettiere had also begun telling more of her own story through her memoir and interviews, offering audiences a perspective beyond the characters they had watched her play. Her career, personal openness, and enduring connection with fans ensure that her impact on television and film will extend well beyond the roles that first made her famous.
