James Bond Franchise Has a New Home at Amazon MGM Studios
The James Bond franchise has a new home, thanks to a blockbuster deal between Amazon MGM Studios and EON Productions. Read on for a closer look at the financials of this deal.
EON Productions Sells Creative Control of Bond Franchise
EON Productions, the media company operated by Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli, recently filed a new earnings report indicating that Amazon MGM Studios has invested $20 million to take over creative control of the popular James Bond franchise. The report was filed in the United Kingdom (UK), detailing that EON entered into the agreement to sell its mega Bond franchise in February of 2025. The filing confirms that Amazon will have control of the associated assets in addition to EON's subsidiary companies, B24 Limited and B25 Limited. The total sale clocked in at $20 million.
While $20 million is an astronomical sum of money by any measure, the amount is still well short of the $1 billion figure originally reported when the Bond deal was first reported. For context, Disney bought the rights to the Star Wars franchise for $4 billion in 2012. However, it should be noted that the full picture of the structure of the sale was not released, meaning that the negotiations could have included stock options in Amazon.
Sources close to the situation are reporting that the deal was organized as a joint venture. EON is set to receive payment over time, while Amazon will retain the majority stake in the agreement. In addition, the $20 million is expected to be an initial payment with more money headed to EON over time. In other words, the $20 million was just a fraction of the deal.
EON used B24 Limited and B25 Limited as special-purpose subsidiaries to produce both "Spectre" and "No Time to Die." The transaction completion date of February 20, 2025, confirms that tthe deal was kept secret for over a month before it was announced.
Health of EON Productions Over the Years
The latest earnings report from EON Productions stated a total company revenue of $16.3 million in 2024. This figure was down nearly $12 million from 2023. EON Productions notched revenue of over $273 million in 2021, the year that the company released the hit "No Time to Die." This film was the last Bond adventure for actor Daniel Craig. The pre-tax profit for EON in 2024 was only about $1.75 million, as the production company bounced back from a loss of about 1.4 million from the prior year.
EON Productions does not have all of its eggs in the Bond basket. The company is home to a number of other franchises. Most notably, EON is set to partner with Amazon MGM Studios on the Dick Van Dyke classic film "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang." Acclaimed director Matthew Warchus is slated to direct this film.
As for what is next for Agent 007, Amazon MGM Studios is reportedly moving forward with the development of a new Bond film. "Dune" director Denis Villeneuve has been tapped to take the helm of the reboot, while Amy Pascal and David Heyman have been confirmed as producers. Villeneuve has yet to find a new actor to play Bond. Reports indicate that he wants a new Brit to take over the coveted role.
How the new film transpires under the umbrella of Amazon will be something that Hollywood insiders watch closely in the months to come.
