According to Rainn, Steve Carrell‘s departure from the show made the show more complicated but it wasn’t a surprise to the cast or crew.
“We knew it was coming for a long time. He was such a big movie star at the time…Of course, he was going to leave The Office when he could, so we were prepared for it,” Rainn said, referring to Steve‘s 2011 exit from the series.
Even though they knew it was coming, Rainn said losing one of the main cast members made creating the show more complicated.
On the podcast, Rainn recalled the change and said, “It was a little bit chaotic of trying to figure out the tone of the show. Who’s the lead? And, how are we telling these stories without the comic engine of the show, which is Michael Scott, and without one of the greatest comic actors in American history at the center of our show?”
