Tension Building Between President Trump and Seth Meyers
President Donald Trump is in another spat with a late-night television host. This time around, the target is "Late Night" host Seth Meyers. Here is the latest on this developing situation that crisscrosses both the political and entertainment spheres.
President Trump Hurls Insults at Seth Meyers
The president has not been shy about his feelings toward Meyers. The contentious relationship is probably not going to improve anytime soon, following a post that Trump shared on Truth Social on November 1. In the post, Trump referred to Meyers as "the least talented person to 'perform' live in the history of television." Trump went on to say that Meyers was "the WORST to perform, live, or otherwise."
What drew this criticism? Meyers drew the ire of Trump after mocking his trip to Asia last week. The matter started when Trump addressed U.S. troops while visiting Japan, announcing that he would issue an executive order designed to restore the use of steam-powered catapults across some of the nation's aircraft carriers. During the address to the troops, Trump went on about the catapults and how he wants to understand their power better, specifically why the country is spending billions of dollars on electric-power catapults rather than going back to the old generation steam-powered weapons.
The talk show host used the comments as fodder in one of his bits last week, joking that Trump "spends more time thinking about catapults than Wile E. Coyote." Meyers mocked the president, pretending to be him, saying that the country misses the days when you could tie a person to a rocket.
Later in the episode, Meyers said that military experts have said that it would cost billions of dollars to revert to the old system. However, Trump believes he knows about the aviation issue than anyone else because "he dances like one of those guys that hold the signaling sticks on the runway."
Meyers did not let the issue end with his show. He also posted a clip of these comments on Instagram with the caption, "forget the government shutdown, it's catapult time!"
Trump Calls Meyers a "Deranged Lunatic"
While the audience might have laughed at Meyers' jokes, the president did not find them funny. Trump went on to his Truth Social account shortly after to detail that he watched the show for the first time in years, making fun of Meyers for spending so much time talking about electric catapults. The president went on to question why NBC wastes its time and money on Meyers, calling him a "truly deranged lunatic."
Trump concluded the lengthy Truth Social post by saying that Meyers had no talent or ratings. The president erroneously stated that Meyers was "100% anti-Trump, which is probably illegal."
The president and Meyers have a history of bickering. In August, Trump took to social media to criticize the late-night personality after learning that NBC had renewed the show's contract. During that rant, Trump said that Meyers had "the personality of an insecure child."
Despite the president's vocal displeasure toward his dissenters, many late-night hosts continue to criticize the president and the Republican Party in general. In addition to Jimmy Kimmel, Jon Stewart, and Stephen Colbert have also taken on the president, showing little fear of retribution.
The situation with Kimmel made headlines in September after Disney pulled his late-night show from its lineup after comments he made about the Charlie Kirk assassination. Free speech advocates express concern that the country is on a slippery slope if the president has this much power to dictate what the media can and cannot say about him.
