Could Ozempic and Wegovy Help Slow Biological Aging?
Over the last few years, medications like Wegovy and Ozempic, which are both classified as GLP-1 medications, have become wildly popular because of their weight-loss benefits. However, new research indicates that these medications may also offer benefits beyond weight loss and blood sugar control. Studies show that these medications may also help with the effects of biological aging, including kidney and cardiac function.
A new study from researchers at the University of California San Diego provides the first randomized clinical evidence that semaglutide, the active ingredient in Ozempic and Wegovy, may slow certain markers of biological aging. While the findings are preliminary and focused on a specific group of patients, they add to a growing body of research suggesting GLP-1 medications may affect far more than metabolism.
Biological Age Isn't the Same as Chronological Age
It’s important to note that biological age and chronological age are not the same thing. Everyone celebrates birthdays in the same order, and taking GLP-1 medications is not the same thing as “finding the fountain of youth.” They don’t magically turn a 50-year-old into a 20-year-old. Instead, they may alter how the body’s cells and tissue function.
To estimate biological aging, researchers often rely on "epigenetic clocks." These tools analyze chemical markers on DNA, known as DNA methylation, to estimate how quickly the body is aging at a cellular level. Several of these clocks have been linked to future risks of chronic disease and premature mortality.
The Study Found Slower Aging Markers Among Semaglutide Users
The study from the University of California San Diego involved 108 adult patients who have been diagnosed with HIV-associated lipohypertrophy, a condition characterized by abnormal fat accumulation that can develop after long-term HIV treatment. Participants were randomly assigned to receive either weekly semaglutide injections or a placebo for 32 weeks.
The research team gathered DNA samples before and after the study and found that the patients who received semaglutide experienced slower biological aging across multiple epigenetic measurements. One of the most widely used aging markers, known as the DunedinPACE clock, suggested about a 9% reduction in the pace of biological aging compared with participants receiving the placebo. However, the DunedinPACE clock wasn’t the only piece of interesting information produced by the study. Other aging markers associated with inflammation, heart health, brain health, kidney function, liver function, and overall mortality risk also showed improvement.
Researchers Believe Reduced Inflammation May Be the Key
Scientists agree that Wegovy and Ozempic are not “anti-aging drugs” in the traditional sense. Instead, they believe that many of the benefits found in the UCSD study are based on their ability to reduce chronic inflammation, improve metabolism, and decrease excess body fat.
Scientists have known for years that chronic inflammation has a negative effect on the biological aging process. Inflammation has been shown to increase the risk of certain types of heart disease, dementia, and diabetes. By improving these underlying processes, semaglutide may indirectly slow some of the molecular changes associated with aging.
The Results Don't Mean Everyone Will Age More Slowly
While the study from UCSD shows some promise, the team has acknowledged that more research is needed. They also urge caution when interpreting the findings of the 32-week study.
The participants in this study all shared a specific medical condition, meaning the results may not automatically apply to the general population. In addition, the trial lasted just 32 weeks, making it impossible to determine whether the observed changes would continue over several years or translate into longer life expectancy.
Researchers also note that biological aging markers are helpful pieces of information, but they rarely paint the full picture of how an individual’s body is progressing through the aging process. They also do nothing to prove that someone will live longer or be healthy during their later years. Larger studies involving more diverse populations will be necessary before scientists can answer those questions confidently.
What This Means for Patients
In the short-term, the findings of the study on GLP-1 medications are unlikely to have a major impact on patients. These medications should continue to be used only for their approved and intended purposes. However, the growing body of research may change how semaglutide is used in the future.
Lifestyle habits, including regular physical activity, a nutritious diet, adequate sleep, and avoiding tobacco, remain the most well-established strategies for supporting healthy aging. If future studies confirm these early findings, however, GLP-1 medications could eventually become part of a broader approach to preventing age-related diseases rather than simply treating obesity or diabetes.
