After Weeks of Quiet, the Atlantic Has a High-Risk System to Watch

Don't look now, but the tropical Atlantic is finally starting to heat up. After a quiet start to the season, the National Hurricane Center (NHC) is now predicting that the next named storm will come to life in the central Atlantic in the coming days. Here is the latest update on what is happening in the tropics.

NHC Growing More Certain About Tropical Development Chances

The NHC has assigned an 80% chance of development over the next week for a zone of rain showers and thunderstorms moving toward the Caribbean. The tropical wave is currently churning in a part of the basin that is sporting favorable conditions for further growth. The next name on the list of Atlantic storms for 2026 is Cristobal.

This wave is most likely to take on formal tropical characteristics between Wednesday and Friday. The presence of the Bermuda-Azores High is forecast to send the wave on a west-northwest track in the days ahead. Should this wave peak as a weak tropical storm, it would likely move through the Leeward Islands, bringing heavy rain, gusty conditions, and rough seas over the weekend.

However, if the wave organizes and intensifies more quickly, it is forecast to take a sharp turn to the north of the Leeward Islands. The disruptive winds known as wind shear are likely to limit how much this feature strengthens as it gets close to the Caribbean by late in the weekend.

The feature would need to slide through the wind shear and remain organized in order for it to impact the southeastern U.S. by late next week. A faster intensification would steer the system farther to the north before it could impact any of the U.S.

For now, forecasters are urging interests in the Leeward Islands and the north-central Caribbean to remain vigilant. This includes the U.S. territory of Puerto Rico.

Elsewhere in the Atlantic

Looking at the rest of the Atlantic basin, a different tropical wave moving ahead of the primary area of concern is starting to fall apart. Forecasters had predicted that this first wave would dissipate once it reached this part of the basin. However, the diminishing wave is breaking apart the wind shear and adding more moisture to the atmosphere ahead of the trailing wave.

Right on schedule, activity is beginning to pick up in the Main Development Region (MDR) of the Atlantic. The zone tends to see more tropical waves move off the coast from Africa starting in August and lasting through October. These waves and named storms that develop in the MDR are often referred to as Cabo Verde systems, referencing the group of islands located off the northwestern coast of Africa.

You have to go back to the middle of July and Tropical Storm Bertha to find the last time that a named storm roamed the Atlantic. Stay tuned to find out if that will change this week.
