August 2026 Just Tied the Record for the Hottest Month on Earth

New data is confirming that it truly was hotter than normal this summer. Here is a look at the recent analysis and what it means for the future.

More Data Confirms Planet is Warming to Historical Levels

August 2026 officially tied July 2023 as the hottest month ever recorded across the world. Climatologists say that the intensification of  El Niño and sizzling ocean waters sent global temperatures into record territory.

According to the Copernicus Climate Change Service, the global average surface air temperature hit 62.5 degrees Fahrenheit in August. This average was good enough to tie with July of 2023 as the warmest month dating back to 1940.

What is really interesting is that August came in at 0.1 degrees warmer than July 2026. This is unusual because July is historically the hottest month of the year on the planet. Copernicus data indicates that there have only been four other years since 1940 when August eclipsed July for overall heat.

The average temperature in August ended up registering 2.97 degrees higher than the pre-industrial global average from 1850 to 1900. This statistic exemplifies how global warming due to an increased reliance on fossil fuels is sending temperatures higher and higher. While the news is dire, scientists note that one month above the normal threshold does not mean that the planet has officially crossed the goal of the Paris Agreement of limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius over a longer period.

Much of the heating came from the world's oceans. The average sea-surface temperature measured between 60 degrees north and 60 degrees south hit 69.9 degrees, tying March 2024 for the top monthly ocean temperature recorded on any given month. Notably, the daily global sea surface reading hit a record 70 degrees on August 24 and 25.

Extreme Heat Marked the Summer Weather in the U.S.

Americans are not at all surprised by the news of the record temperatures. July 2026 went down in history as the hottest month ever notched in the Lower 48. The contiguous U.S. saw an average temperature reading of 76.9 degrees in July, shattering records dating back to 1895, including the extreme heat of 1936 during the infamous Dust Bowl.

Several heat domes anchored over the U.S. were responsible for the extreme temperatures. Dry conditions amplified the sizzling temperatures as the ground held onto the heat.

According to NOAA's Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI),  data from June, July, and August signaled that four U.S. states experienced their warmest summers in 132 years of data. Utah, Colorado, and New Mexico all set new records, while Arizona tied for the record for its warmest summer on record. All of these states saw the mercury hover at more than 5 degrees above the historical average.

Temperatures Throttled Up in Western Europe

It was also an exceptionally warm summer in western Europe. This part of the world eclipsed its previous hot summer record of 2003 this year. The average temperature between June and August hit 71 degrees, translating to 4.6 degrees above the 30-year average between 1991 and 2020.

Copernicus' ERA5 data demonstrated that large swaths of England, Wales, Belgium, France, Spain, Austria, Italy, and Switzerland all experienced their hottest summer in history. Multiple heat waves and widespread drought conditions led to a miserable summer for much of this region.

The ongoing dryness also contributed to rapidly falling water levels across many of Europe's major rivers, including the Danube and Rhine. This impact has triggered disruptions to commerce and transportation.

Looking ahead, climatologists warn that this record is only the beginning. El Niño is expected to continue to strengthen at a breakneck speed, impacting the jet stream and associated storm tracks. This means that moisture could be hard to come by in many corners of the globe. Meteorologists will be closely monitoring the intensification of El Niño and how it will shape the weather in the months ahead.
