It is not unusual for climate patterns to get "stuck," resulting in a string of wet weekends. This phenomenon was most notable between 2023 and 2025 when the Northeast seemed to see long lists of consecutive rainout weekends. And naturally, the sun would come out just in time to return to the office and the classroom on Monday.
What does the science have to say about this? A study out of NASA using a combination of satellite data and rainfall observations demonstrated that rain totals and intensity do tend to increase over the southeastern U.S. by midweek.
This increase is attributed to rising pollution levels as the week progresses. The aerosols emitted into the atmosphere during weekday commutes and various industrial activities provide a surface for moisture to adhere to. This moisture buildup is then converted into rain just in time for the weekend.
This effect is less notable in the western U.S. Scientists believe that this is because the West tends to see less pollution, in addition to its lower population density.
In short, while there is a scientific explanation for why the East Coast may see a higher proportion of rainier weekends, this is not an absolute that can be applied to the nation as a whole. In addition, scientists note that there is a strong chance of confirmation bias built into these assumptions. This means that it may simply feel like it is raining more on the weekends because you are more aware of the threat.
How the Jet Stream Contributes to the Repeating Weather Patterns
What meteorologists are certain about is that the jet stream is a contributing factor to the seemingly repetitive nature of weather patterns. The jet stream is a narrow plume of strong winds that encircles the planet at an elevation of about 30,000 feet off the ground. The ribbon bounces around from north to south, impacting the weather with each movement.
A southward dip in the jet stream is known in climatological circles as a trough. These features usher in cooler temperatures from the north and a higher chance of wetter weather. At any given time, you can expect to see four to seven of these plunges in the jet stream in either of the two hemispheres.
The chances of that dip happening on a weekend are driven by the overall curviness of the jet stream. The dips typically come and go at regular intervals until a shift in the atmosphere creates a new pattern. For example, dips could usher in moisture once per week, or they could result in a more frequent pattern of rain if the dip is closer to your location.
