Firefighters Killed in Greece as Europe's Wildfire Crisis Widens

The devastating wildfires spreading across parts of Europe are continuing to claim lives. The latest tragedy unfolded recently in Greece when three firefighters died on Wednesday. Here is the latest update on Mother Nature's wrath in this corner of the world.

Greece Mourns Loss of Three Firefighters

Three firefighters lost their lives this week battling a rash of wildfires raging across Greece. The deadly event is just another example of the devastation that has impacted many areas of Europe over the last few months. Extreme heat and dry conditions are being blamed for the unusually active wildfire season.

According to the BBC, two of the deaths happened when crew members became trapped fighting an inferno in the Rethymno area of the island of Crete. The third firefighter died battling a wildfire on the southern edge of the Greek mainland. Other blazes have been spreading on the islands of Paros and Lesbos.

The string of fires is running along the Atlantic coast to the east into the Mediterranean region, stretching from the Scottish Highlands to the south of Spain. France and Spain have seen the worst of the crippling fires in recent weeks.

While crews were able to get a better handle on these fires earlier in the week, another heat wave spreading across the continent is presenting worries that flare-ups will reignite the flames. Temperatures hit 100 degrees on Wednesday in Bordeaux, France, as crews raced to protect the popular tourist destination. French authorities confirmed that four firefighters have died in recent weeks in this country.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez offered a bit of hope when he told the media on Wednesday that "The situation continues to evolve favorably, while exercising the utmost prudence, the utmost caution, and every possible preventive measure, but it remains favorable." Approximately 44,000 evacuees in Spain have been allowed to return home. Meanwhile, fire crews in Spain have turned their focus to cooling down the areas that have already burned in an effort to prevent additional flare-ups.

Also on the Iberian Peninsula, a fire in the northeastern Guarda area of Portugal has necessitated a large response of about 400 firefighters. Moving to the southeast, a primary highway in Turkey was forced to close due to wildfire activity. Local officials also had to evacuate a hospital as the flames inched closer.

Heart of Wildfire Activity Predicted to Shift Farther East in August

Maria Zuber, head of the European Union Emergency Response Coordination Center, warned that areas located farther to the east of the current hot spots could be next in line. The extreme heat could spell trouble for parts of central Europe that have been largely spared so far.

Zuber said that Italy will be in the danger zone at the beginning of August. She also warned that Greece will continue to be under the threat of wildfires as the calendar flips to August and the region bakes.
