Global Ocean Temperatures Just Hit Their Highest Point Ever Recorded
The impacts of a strengthening El Niño are showing up in the form of exceptionally warm waters across the Atlantic. Here is a closer look at the record-breaking readings and what it means for anticipated weather patterns in the coming months.
Record-High Ocean Water Temperatures as El Niño Intensifies
The unusually toasty sea surface temperatures in the Atlantic basin have sent the average readings across the world's oceans to a new high for the month of August. According to the Copernicus Climate Change Service, the average sea surface temperatures measured in the extra-polar oceans hit 70 degrees on August 22. This was good enough to beat the previous record from March of 2024.
The research from Copernicus looks at ocean locations between 60 degrees north and 60 degrees south, taking the polar regions out of the analysis. The data goes back to 1979 when the use of satellite observations became more mainstream.
What makes this record most unusual is the timing of the heat. Global ocean water temperatures usually notch their warmest readings in March or April on the heels of summer in the Southern Hemisphere. This means that this is likely the peak of the temperatures, as a downward trend is expected to follow in the weeks ahead. However, there is a chance that a new record high could be set again in March when the waters in the Southern Hemisphere heat up again.
The warming trend happening in the world's oceans is having a disastrous impact on fragile underwater ecosystems. The number of marine heat waves seen around the world has more than tripled since the early 1990s. The risk to these ecosystems and nearby coastal communities will increase as temperatures tick upward.
In addition to an elevated threat of marine heat waves, warmer oceans also increase the chance of coral bleaching events. Fishing interests in coastal areas are also adversely impacted by the warmer waters.
How El Niño Will Drive the Weather This Fall and Winter
The warmer ocean waters naturally add moisture to the atmosphere, influencing rain and snow patterns across the planet. This is happening just as El Niño is starting to intensify and alter the natural flow of the jet stream. As a result, heavier snow and rain could fall in the months ahead in areas that typically do not see this volume of precipitation.
For instance, a typical El Niño phase fires up the storm track across the southern third of the U.S., resulting in more moisture in a zone from Southern California and into the Southeast, the Gulf Coast, and the Southeast. The East Coast also generally experiences cloudier conditions when El Niño is in control.
Conversely, El Niño tends to favor warmer temperatures and drier conditions across the northern third of the U.S. during the winter months. That said, periodic shifts in the jet stream can still allow cold air and wintry precipitation to dip down from Canada in normally temperate climates.
