Mineral vs. Chemical: What the Labels Really Mean
Sunscreens work in one of two ways. Mineral sunscreens, which use zinc oxide or titanium dioxide as active ingredients, sit on top of the skin and physically reflect UV rays away from the surface. They begin working immediately upon application and are generally better tolerated by people with sensitive skin, rosacea, or melasma. The tradeoff is a noticeable white cast and a heavier feel on the skin.
Chemical sunscreens absorb into the top layer of skin and convert UV radiation into heat, which is then released by the body. They tend to be lighter and more invisible after application, making them popular for everyday use under makeup. Many chemical formulas are also designed to be sweat- and water-resistant for longer periods, which makes them well-suited for outdoor activity.
Neither type is universally superior. Dermatologists and licensed aestheticians generally recommend mineral sunscreens for babies, young children, pregnant women, and anyone with easily irritated skin. For adults who need a formula that holds up through heavy activity or extended sweating, a sport-focused chemical formula may serve them better.
What SPF Rating Do You Actually Need?
SPF measures how well a sunscreen protects against UVB rays, the type that cause sunburn and contribute to skin cancer. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, one in five Americans will develop skin cancer at some point in their lifetime, making regular sun protection one of the most impactful preventive measures available.

For everyday use and face coverage under makeup, a lightweight gel or fluid formula with SPF 30 to 46 is generally enough. Moisturizers and foundations with added SPF are helpful as supplemental protection, but they cannot substitute for dedicated sunscreen. Most only reach SPF 15 to 30, and the thin layer typically applied falls well short of what is needed to deliver the labeled protection.
Reef-Safe Sunscreen: When It Matters
If you are traveling to Hawaii, Key West, the U.S. Virgin Islands, or Aruba, reef-safe sunscreen is a legal requirement, not just a preference. These destinations have banned sunscreens containing oxybenzone and octinoxate, two chemical UV filters linked to coral reef damage.
For reef-safe travel, mineral sunscreens using zinc oxide or titanium dioxide are the safest choice. Look for "non-nano" zinc oxide on the label, as nano-sized particles may still carry environmental concerns. Checking the ingredient list directly is more reliable than relying on "reef-safe" marketing language, which the FDA does not regulate.
One Rule That Overrides All Others
Whether you choose mineral or chemical, SPF 30 or SPF 50, spray or lotion, the most effective sunscreen is the one you actually use consistently. Apply generously: most adults need about one ounce for full body coverage. And do not skip it on overcast days. UV rays penetrate cloud cover and can cause as much damage on a gray day as under full sun.
