Puerto Rico's economy, particularly its pharmaceutical and medical device manufacturing sector, which represents roughly 30% of the island's economic output, ground to a near-halt, contributing to a temporary but significant shortage of medical supplies across the U.S. mainland in the months that followed.
Why the Grid Is Still a Vulnerability Today
Rebuilding Puerto Rico's power system became one of the most expensive and drawn-out infrastructure projects in recent U.S. history, with federal funding allocations eventually reaching into the billions of dollars specifically earmarked for grid reconstruction. But large portions of that funding sat unspent for years, delayed by bureaucratic review processes and disputes over how projects should be scoped and executed.
The underlying fragility never fully went away.
