If No Hurricane Forms by Friday, 2026 Sets a New Atlantic Record
The Atlantic hurricane season will officially reach its climatological peak on September 10. This means that this is the time of the year when you would expect the highest volume of activity. So why is it so quiet in the Atlantic basin?
Small Chance of Tropical Development Off the Southeastern Coastline
Despite this week marking the climatological peak of the Atlantic hurricane season, there is nary a storm to be seen. This corner of the world's oceans has been particularly calm this season, largely due to the impacts of a strengthening El Niño. There have been just five named storms this year, and none of them have gone on to become hurricanes.
Forecasters with the National Hurricane Center (NHC) have identified an area with a low chance of tropical development during the middle of September. The long-range forecast suggests that a slow-moving front will shift into the southeastern U.S. The movement of this front will amplify the threat of thunderstorms across the Southeast. As such, a zone of tropical development could come to life just off the coastline.
This is similar to what happened last week when Tropical Storm Edouard formed in the Gulf and moved ashore in eastern Texas near the Louisiana border. Despite the other prohibitive factors that have put a lid on tropical activity this year, the ocean waters across the Gulf and the Atlantic remain exceptionally warm. These warm waters provide a fertile breeding ground for storms to take root and grow should the other conditions align.
Even if no named storm comes out of this stalled frontal boundary, the Southeast should be prepared for a surge in tropical moisture and locally gusty winds. In addition to the threat of thunderstorms, beachgoers and boaters may also encounter hazards in the water.
The next name up on the list of 2026 names for the Atlantic is Fay.
Historic Season in the Atlantic?
With no named features on the horizon this week, it is becoming increasingly more likely that 2026 will end up going down in the history books as the latest date for the season's first hurricane. Dating back to the satellite era in the 1960s, the latest date for the first hurricane of the year to form is September 11. This happened in both 2002 and 2013.
In the likely scenario that no hurricane forms by Friday, this season will be distinguished as the latest point in the modern era without a hurricane in this basin. Climatologists also note that the last time the Atlantic saw no hurricanes at all was in 1914. Should the season continue to remain quiet, there is a chance that 2026 could join 1914 on this rare list.
The frequent intrusions of wind shear have worked to break up storms before they get the chance to intensify. In addition, several plumes of dry Saharan dust have tracked across the Atlantic over the last few months, stopping storms in their tracks. This unfavorable environment is forecast to continue through the end of the season, limiting further development.
