Latest Update on Amazon Web Services Outages

It has been a rough day for tech users as a massive internet outage triggered by an Amazon Web Services (AWS) fault continues to wreak havoc. As of mid-day Monday, the outage was being resolved, and services have been slowly returning to normal. Here is the latest on this far-reaching outage and what services were impacted by the glitch.

Amazon Web Services Outage Causes Issues for Millions Worldwide

A widespread AWS outage temporarily brought down a large number of widely used internet sites and services. The outage impacted several banks, media services, airlines, delivery apps, and more around the world.  The cloud computer provider is host to several online services, resulting in a significant meltdown when it went down just after midnight on Monday morning.

Some of the services that were impacted by the outage were Amazon, AT&T, Hulu, McDonald's, Canva, Snapchat, Fortnite, Disney+, Delta Airlines, United Air Lines, Pokémon, PlayStation, and Roblox. Several banking apps were also impacted by the outage, putting financial services in turmoil as the work week began overseas. In addition to basic online services that were affected, smart home devices linked to Amazon were also down as some Americans woke up to start the day.

AWS issued a formal statement at 1:26 am ET confirming that its service was experiencing "significant error rates for requests." Officials with AWS used its website to keep customers informed about what it was doing to resolve the issue. Just after 2 am ET, AWS noted that it had identified the cause of the outages and was actively taking steps to accelerate the recovery.

Technology experts said that Amazon always had its data safely guarded during the outages. It was simply unable to connect to the apps to supply the data.

Downdetector, a website that compiles user-submitted reports of disruptions online, noted that it had fielded 6.5 million global reports connected to the AWS outage. Over a million of these were received from users in the U.S. during the first two hours of the overnight outage. Meanwhile, over 400,000 reports came in from the United Kingdom during the same time period.

Another Glitch Causes Second Meltdown

The outage had originally been resolved completely by 6:35 am ET. However, it took some time for some apps to be up and running as normal. Amazon recommended that companies clear their cache in an effort to accelerate the service restoration.

And just when services appeared to be working again, another glitch triggered a second meltdown. Amazon confirmed late Monday morning that its cloud services were experiencing difficulties. These services power thousands of apps and websites around the globe. The company said that the latest round of problems is causing network connectivity problems.

Amazon is now limiting the ability of customers to launch new Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) instances in an attempt to fix the problem. Companies that are being impacted by the second outage now include Google and Venmo.

Many businesses that lean on AWS used X to post updates for their customers. The silver lining for the U.S. is that the majority of the chaos happened in the overnight hours, meaning that many Americans were not affected by the initial outage.

It is still not clear what caused the outage. Amazon will need to conduct a postmortem analysis in the days ahead to determine what went wrong and how to mitigate the chances that it happens again. It is likely that the issue stemmed from a system engineered to monitor the load on the AWS network. Amazon confirmed on Monday that it was taking steps to help that feature recover.

Experts warn that the outage could end up resulting in losses of billions of dollars. The losses will result from the widespread travel disruptions, issues accessing financial services, and the inability of consumers to make purchases.
