Meet Goldie: The "Determined" Goat Who Led Firefighters Straight to a Wildfire
Fire crews on the scene battling a wildfire in Colorado have found help in an expected place. Read on for the details of how a goat helped firefighters battle a blaze burning near Colorado Springs.
Goldie the Goat Leads Fire Crews to Safety in Colorado
A goat named Goldie is being hailed for giving an assist to firefighters in Colorado. According to CAL Fire, goats are known to be natural grazers with an innate ability to reduce the prevalence of the dry grass and vegetation that often fuels wildfires.
This instinct was recently demonstrated in Colorado when the Rock Creek Fire broke out in El Paso County. Colorado Springs fire crews and the Southern Colorado Interagency Wildland Fire Team reported that "a very determined goat" led crews to the fire area.
A video posted by the Colorado Springs Fire Department this week shows Goldie munching on brush while walking beside firefighters as they approached the Rock Creek Fire. The Southern Colorado Interagency Wildland Fire Team confirmed that Goldie led the crew members in and out of the fire zone, guiding them to the safest route. The team said that Goldie made the typical goat noises when they stopped, urging them to keep following her to safety.
Goldie was returned to her family after lending a hand to crews battling the blaze.
While a goat's involvement in the firefighting effort may seem unusual, CAL Fire reports that “Grazing by goats can create fire breaks or fuel breaks, which can impede the spread of wildfires and provide additional protection to vulnerable areas, such as homes and infrastructure."
