More Americans Are Moving to This State Than Any Other in 2026

South Carolina is having a moment. The state is the nation's hotspot for Americans looking to relocate, continuing its distinction of being at the top of the moving list for the last seven years. Here is a look at why so many people are choosing the Palmetto State for their next home, as well as what other states are becoming prime relocation destinations.

South Carolina Relocation Market Sizzles

A recent report by moveBuddha is demonstrating that Americans are flocking to South Carolina. The online relocation service platform looked at nearly 98,000 internet searches over the first six months of the year to give each state in the U.S. a move-in-to-move-out ratio. This ratio compares the number of web searches by people looking to relocate to the number of departures for a particular state, giving a comprehensive view of the whole picture.

South Carolina came in at a 2.02 move-in-to-move-out search ratio, putting it at the top of the list. Already home to over 5.5 million people, the state is now "on track to earn its seventh year with the highest ratio of searches for moves in versus out.”

What is so attractive about South Carolina? The state offers a little bit of everything, ranging from bustling southern cities to charming coastal communities to quaint mountain towns.

Mountain West Another Hot Spot for People Looking to Relocate

Idaho comes in in second place, boasting a 1.65 move-in-to-move-out search ratio. The state in the Mountain West had been in first place earlier in the year before South Carolina took over the top spot.  The Gem State is now home to over 2 million people and growing. The largest city in Idaho, Boise, has experienced a population explosion over the last several years.

The Mountain West has emerged as one of the nation's most sought-after regions. In addition to Idaho, Arizona, Montana, and New Mexico have all seen notable year-over-year population gains.

Florida comes in at third place on moveBuddha's list. The Sunshine State saw a 35% increase in its in-to-out search ratio. The peninsula also boasts the list's top move-to city so far this year. That honor belongs to the Villages, the popular 55-plus retirement community located roughly 80 miles north of Tampa. This community is enjoying an in-to-out ratio of 3.58.

Florida and South Carolina benefit from their reputation of being highly affordable, as is true for all of the southern U.S. This affordability is a main draw for communities such as the Villages, making it attractive for retirees on a budget. About 150,000 retirees currently call the Villages home.

Rounding out the top ten after South Carolina, Idaho, and Florida are South Dakota, North Carolina, Arkansas, Montana, Tennessee, Alabama, and Maine.
