NASA Reveals New Images of SpaceX Rocket's Moon Crash
Science shows that the Moon has spent billions of years collecting evidence of collisions with asteroids, meteoroids, and other objects. Now, scientists have a new kind of impact to study. On August 5, 2026, a spent SpaceX Falcon 9 upper stage smashed into the Moon after spending more than a year drifting through space. NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter has now captured detailed before-and-after images of the site, revealing a fresh crater roughly 60 feet across and less than 10 feet deep.
The crash was not planned, but the Moon crater images may provide a new layer of lunar exploration. The resulting crater is giving researchers an unusual opportunity to study how a large artificial object behaves when it strikes the Moon, and raising questions about what could happen as lunar exploration becomes increasingly crowded.
A Rocket Stage Ended Up on a Collision Course With the Moon
The SpaceX rocket Moon crash was not part of the plan when the rocket initially launched. SpaceX launched the rocket on Jan. 15, 2025, carrying Firefly Aerospace's Blue Ghost 1 lunar lander as part of NASA's Commercial Lunar Payload Services program. After completing its role in the mission, the upper stage remained in space rather than being deliberately directed toward another destination.
Over the course of a year, gravitational forces and solar activity drastically altered its trajectory. Eventually, astronomers determined that the rocket was on a collision course with the Moon. NASA and SpaceX tracked the object as its trajectory became clearer, with the eventual impact occurring near the Einstein and Bell craters on the far side of the Moon.
The Impact Happened at Thousands of Miles Per Hour
Scientists have determined that the rocket hit the surface of the Moon at roughly 5,400 MPH. The speed of the collision is especially notable because of the damage that it caused. According to NASA, impact craters form when objects moving at extremely high speeds collide with a planetary surface, producing shockwaves and ejecting material from the impact site.
The rocket’s mass and the speed at which it struck the Moon combined to excavate a new crater on the lunar surface. While the resulting depression is smaller than some other craters, it is large enough to be clearly visible from lunar orbit.
NASA's Before-and-After Images Tell the Story
NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter has been circling the Moon since 2009, and it has already provided the most striking evidence of the SpaceX lunar rocket impact. The spacecraft captured images of the impact site roughly a week after the collision from about 60 miles above the lunar surface.
Mission controllers had to adjust the spacecraft's orientation so its cameras could point toward the newly created crater. The before-and-after imagery makes it easy to distinguish exactly what the SpaceX rocket crash did to the lunar surface.
The crater, which measures less than 10 feet deep and roughly 60 feet across, has bright and dark streaks coming out of it. Those streaks are scientifically useful because they contain material excavated and thrown outward during the collision.
Why the Streaks Around the Crater Matter
A lunar impact doesn’t simply create a hole in the Moon’s surface. When an object strikes the Moon at high velocity, enormous amounts of pulverized rock are thrown outward. This material, known as ejecta, spreads across the surrounding surface. Some of it can travel surprisingly far from the original crater. By studying the color differences around the new crater, scientists can gather data about where the material came from.
According to NASA scientists, darker streaks contain materials that had been exposed near the Moon’s surface for extremely long periods of time. That material has been impacted by solar winds, cosmic rays, and countless tiny objects that strike the Moon’s surface every day. In contrast, the brighter colors come from layers further beneath the Moon’s surface. Ultimately, this means that the SpaceX rocket Moon crash turned over a small portion of the Moon’s surface.
The Crash Could Provide a Lesson for Future Missions
An accidental impact on the Moon’s surface provides researchers with an opportunity to learn more about the Moon and its makeup. Since researchers know the approximate size, mass, and composition of the rocket stage, as well as its impact speed and trajectory, they have an unusually well-documented example of a human-made object striking the lunar surface.
The Falcon 9 stage wasn't supposed to become a permanent feature of the Moon, but it did. As more spacecraft make the journey to Earth's nearest neighbor, incidents like this could become an increasingly important part of planning how humans operate beyond Earth.
