Proven Skincare Tips for the Fall Season

The changing of the leaves during the fall season is also a sign to change up your skincare routine. The onset of cooler and drier weather can wreak havoc on the skin's natural balance, necessitating the use of a skincare routine designed to mitigate the elements. Here are a few skincare tips to promote glowing skin this fall.

Transition to a Richer Moisturizer

This is the time of the year to consider transitioning to a richer moisturizer. The skin needs a boost of hydration and extra protection as the air becomes drier. While a lightweight lotion is great for the summer, you will serve your skin better with a thicker emollient cream during the fall season. The goal is to lock in the moisture that your skin will inherently lose as humidity levels fall from their summer highs. Moisturizer ingredients such as ceramides and shea butter will deliver the greatest level of hydration to parched skin.

Introduce Ingredients That Retain Moisture

While switching to a richer moisturizer is a good start, you cannot expect your moisturizer to do all of the heavy lifting when it comes to retaining moisture. Introducing ingredients that promote moisture retention is a good addition to any solid moisturizing routine.

There are a number of different ingredients on the market that can help with this quest. Good choices include niacinamide and triple hyaluronic acid. Not only will these ingredients lock in moisture, but they will also soothe the skin and protect against the environmental elements.

Prep with a Good Exfoliator

You cannot expect the skin to soak up the goodness of the moisturizer and the supporting ingredients without prepping it first. A good exfoliator will do the dirty work and prepare the skin to soak up the moisture-retaining ingredients. A quality exfoliator will unclog pores, remove dead skin, and promote an overall brighter complexion. With a cleaner base, the skin will be more likely to absorb the benefits provided by the moisturizer.

While exfoliation is key, you also want to be mindful not to over exfoliate when the air becomes drier. Skin care experts recommend the use of a gentle exfoliator during the fall and winter months so that the skin is not overly irritated.

Pay Attention to the Eye and Lip Areas

The fall is a good time to revamp your skincare routine to include care for the eye area. Negate some of the damage caused by dehydration and skin damage over the summer through the use of an eye cream infused with peptides. This ingredient has been proven to decrease puffiness while increasing collagen production. An increased production of collagen helps erase fine lines and wrinkles in the eye area, giving you a brighter look throughout the dull fall months.

Likewise, the lips need to be treated with care as moisture is sucked out of the air with the falling temperatures. A weekly lip mask will help to replenish this lost moisture.

Do Not Give in to the Cooler Temperatures

It can be tempting to want to warm up cold bones with hot water. However, hot water can damage the natural barrier of the skin. The end result of this damage is dryness and irritation. Instead, use lukewarm water when washing your face.

In that same vein, your skin's health will fare better if you are diligent about staying hydrated. It is easy to forget about drinking plentiful amounts of water in the fall when the temperature begins to drop. Staying hydrated will help your skin from the inside out. You may also want to consider using a humidifier in your home to add more moisture back into the air.

Lastly, this is a good time to remember not to forego the use of sunscreen just because it is not as warm. The sun can damage the skin at any time of the year; however, many people neglect using a daily sunscreen just because the temperatures are falling. Choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen boasting an SPF of 30 or higher for the best level of protection.

You do not have to settle for dull skin as the summer sun fades away. Lean into the coziness of the fall season by nurturing your skin and taking steps to erase the damage that ight have settled in during the hot summer months. Following these tips will give your complexion the best chance to stay radiant and clear heading into the harsh winter months.
