Shaun White and Nina Dobrev Split 5 Years Later
Shaun White and Nina Dobrev are done after five years, calling off their engagement less than a year after he got down on one knee surrounded by rose petals and candles like a rom-com movie.
The three-time Olympic snowboarder and "Vampire Diaries" actress made it "mutual," according to someone close to the couple who spoke anonymously to the AP.
Their History Together
They went Instagram-official in 2020 with Dobrev giving White a "quarantine haircut." Remember when we all thought pandemic relationships were special because we survived lockdown together? Turns out being trapped inside with someone doesn't guarantee forever.
For five years, they did the celebrity couple thing. Travel posts. Red carpet appearances. She followed him to his final Olympics in 2022 where he finished fourth. He showed up to her Netflix movie premiere in 2023. Standard famous people dating protocol - perform the relationship publicly, break up privately.
White, 39, credited Dobrev for pushing him to make a retirement to-do list after Beijing "so I'm not sitting around twiddling my thumbs."
Less Than A Year After Their Engagement
The engagement announcement last October was peak cringe. NYC restaurant, white rose petals everywhere, candles, him on one knee. "She said YES," he posted with a ring emoji. Less than a year later, she said "actually, never mind."
People magazine reports they were seen together August 31st, but Dobrev showed up to the Toronto Film Festival last week sans engagement ring. The universal signal for "we're done but haven't announced it yet."
Now White's focused on The Snow League, his new halfpipe circuit for post-Olympic relevance. Dobrev's starring in a rom-com based on a book called "It Happened One Summer."
Five years is a respectable run in celebrity relationship years. That's like 20 in regular people time. They made it through COVID, career transitions, an Olympics, and multiple Netflix movies. That's more than most Hollywood couples manage.
The Timing's Interesting
White's been retired since 2022, trying to figure out who he is without a snowboard. Dobrev's career is... existing? She's 36, getting rom-com roles, doing the actress thing. Maybe they just realized they were together because it was convenient during weird times. The "mutual decision" line is always suspicious. Someone likely wanted out more.
The anonymous source speaking "because of the sensitivity of the situation" is confusing. Could it be because they feel embarrassed, they are over less than a year after saying yes to whatβs supposed to be forever?
At least they didn't make it to the wedding. No messy divorce, no fighting over who gets the house in Malibu. Just remove the ring, delete some photos, have your people call People magazine. Clean and simple.
The Past Will Fade Away
Their Instagram posts will stay up for a few weeks before quietly disappearing. The engagement announcement with its rose petals and ring emoji will vanish like it never happened. The digital evidence will slowly be scrubbed clean, and they can start anew.
Neither seems particularly broken up about it, which tells you everything. When your breakup is announced by anonymous sources and neither party comments, it's been over for a while.
Five years, one pandemic, one Olympics, and one failed engagement later, they're both free to find someone else to post travel photos with. Maybe this time they'll skip the public rose petal proposal. Those never age well when you have to delete them later.
