A single line of thunderstorms once caused more financial damage than most hurricanes ever have. The 2020 Midwest derecho remains the most expensive thunderstorm event in modern U.S. history, a storm so powerful that meteorologists and residents alike compared it to an inland hurricane.

What Exactly Is a Derecho

A derecho is a fast-moving, long-lived line of thunderstorms that produces widespread, damaging straight-line winds over a huge distance, as opposed to the concentrated, rotating winds of a tornado. To officially qualify, the damage swath typically needs to stretch at least 250 miles and include wind gusts of at least 58 mph along most of its length.

The August 2020 storm went far beyond that minimum. It carved a path roughly 700 to 770 miles long, sweeping from southeastern South Dakota through Nebraska, Iowa, Illinois, Wisconsin, and Indiana before weakening over Ohio. The full event lasted about 14 hours.

Why This Derecho Was So Unusual

Most derechos produce damaging winds for 10 to 20 minutes in any one location before moving on. This storm sustained damaging winds for up to an hour in some areas, conditions similar to what a community might experience during the eyewall of a hurricane, which is exactly why so many meteorologists and journalists described it as a "land-based hurricane."

Measured wind gusts reached 126 mph in Atkins, Iowa, with damage surveys estimating gusts as high as 140 mph near Cedar Rapids, comparable to the winds of a strong Category 4 hurricane. The storm also spawned an outbreak of 26 weak tornadoes across Illinois and Indiana as it moved east, though the storm's straight-line winds caused the overwhelming majority of the damage.

What made the storm especially dangerous was how little warning it gave. Forecast models didn't anticipate an event of this magnitude even the morning it began, and meteorologists were still upgrading risk levels in real time as the storm rapidly intensified through the day.

The Scale of the Damage

The financial toll made this the costliest thunderstorm event ever recorded in the U.S., with damage estimates ranging from roughly $7.5 billion in early assessments to over $11 billion once the full scope became clear.

Cedar Rapids, Iowa, bore the brunt of the destruction. The city lost an estimated 65 to 70% of its tree canopy, and at its peak, more than 95% of residents lost power. Nearly every structure within the city limits, homes, schools, and businesses, sustained some level of damage. Cleanup efforts in the hardest-hit communities stretched on for months, with some infrastructure repairs and tree replanting continuing for years afterward.

Agriculture took a massive hit as well. The storm flattened crops and destroyed grain bins and silos across a huge swath of Iowa farmland, striking just weeks before the fall harvest. An estimated 20% of Iowa's farmland, more than 6 million acres, was affected, with total crop and infrastructure losses running into the hundreds of millions of bushels of grain.

Across the storm's full path, more than 1.9 million utility customers lost power at some point, with hundreds of thousands still without electricity days after the storm passed.

Four Lives Lost

The derecho's winds proved fatal in several communities. A woman in Fort Wayne, Indiana, died when high winds overturned her mobile home. In Iowa's Poweshiek County, a woman was killed when a tree fell on her porch, and a man died from electrocution while attempting to repair a downed power line. In Linn County, a cyclist was killed by a falling tree.

How This Storm Changed Severe Weather Warnings

The derecho's speed and severity exposed a real gap in how the public receives warnings for extreme thunderstorm winds. In its wake, the National Weather Service accelerated the rollout of Wireless Emergency Alerts for the most dangerous thunderstorms.

Today, Severe Thunderstorm Warnings can be tagged with a DESTRUCTIVE damage threat, which automatically triggers the same kind of push alert on mobile phones that's traditionally been reserved for tornado warnings and flash flood emergencies. That system exists in large part because of what happened on August 10, 2020, and how many communities had little warning before the winds arrived.

Why Derechos Like This Are Rare, but Not Unheard Of

Storms of this intensity strike the Midwest roughly once per decade, with comparably destructive derechos recorded in 1998 and 2011. Some researchers have pointed to a possible link between the storm's severity and shifting climate patterns, since derecho-producing weather systems appear to be trending toward higher latitudes over time, though experts are careful to note that no single storm can be definitively attributed to a changing climate.
