The 2026 El Niño Is On Track to Become the Strongest in a Lifetime

The 2026 El Niño is on pace to become one of the strongest in history. Here is how the strengthening climate phase could shape the weather in the coming months.

El Niño Showing No Signs of Slowing Down

Forecasters have been predicting for months that El Niño is coming in fast and furious, already influencing weather patterns around the world in drastic ways. El Niño is the driving climate phase when ocean temperatures near the equator in the eastern and central portions of the Pacific jump above the historical average.

While El Niño has been officially in place for a few months, it is becoming more likely that the 2026-27 El Niño could end up as the strongest since 1950. Global sea surface temperatures eclipsed record highs in July, coming in at 2.1 degrees Celsius above the long-term average.

The latest data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) indicates that the 2026 El Niño forecast mean of 2.66 degrees Celsius above the long-term average in the equatorial Pacific would make it the strongest in recorded history. The previous highest three-month mean of 2.40 degrees dates back to November 1982 through February 1983.

The impacts of El Niño typically become more pronounced in the cooler months of the year, meaning you are more likely to see a greater departure from the norm in the fall and the winter. Looking to the fall in the U.S., forecasters are predicting that the rapidly intensifying El Niño will amplify the current drought conditions across the western U.S. This means that wildfire weather will continue to dominate the headlines.

The Atlantic hurricane season will also likely continue to be relatively mild as a stronger El Niño year usually results in fewer named tropical weather events. Increased wind shear over the Atlantic helps disrupt storms before they can organize and grow. As such, forecasters are lowering their Atlantic hurricane forecast, with just eight to 11 named storms currently projected.

While it is not expected to be a high-volume hurricane season, experts note that it just takes one strike to the U.S. to unleash devastating impacts. September 10 marks the climatological peak of the Atlantic season, giving the basin plenty of time to produce an impactful storm despite El Niño holding back overall numbers.

How Would a Super El Niño Drive the Winter Weather in the U.S.?

How the current El Niño continues to evolve could significantly determine what parts of the U.S. see the most active winter storm pattern. In general, stronger El Niños tend to amplify the storm track along the southern branch of the jet stream, translating to a wetter winter for the South. Conversely, the northern third of the U.S. tends to see warmer and milder winters when a potent El Niño is in charge.

Climatologists also note that water temperatures in both the north-central Pacific and off the coast of Mexico are trending well above average. These marine heat waves may also play a role in where the storm track sets up this winter. As such, meteorologists will be looking at how the marine heat waves interact with the polar vortex in the coming months to influence rainfall, snow, and temperature patterns across the U.S. as the calendar flips from fall to winter.
