Tips to Prolong the Life of a Carved Pumpkin

The spirit of Halloween is in the air as temperatures drop, and kids start hunting for that perfect costume for the big night. The chill in the air may prompt many people to get a jumpstart on their pumpkin carving. How can you prolong the life of your jack-o'-lantern so that it lasts through the Halloween holiday? Here are a few tips about protecting it from the harsh weather, as well as what to spray on your carved pumpkin to keep it fresh for the next two weeks.

How the Weather Can Impact a Pumpkin's Lifespan

Different types of weather can speed up the natural rotting process of a pumpkin. Depending on the region of the country in which you live, you will be dealing with a variety of different elements. The rotting process is accelerated further once it is carved. However, you are not left at the complete mercy of Mother Nature if you want to carve up those gourds early so that you can display them on your porch.

Pumpkins displayed in humid climates are more likely to face trouble at the hands of warmer temperatures and invasive bugs. Humidity triggers the pumpkin to produce mold at a faster rate, naturally encouraging it to rot. Too much sun will also cause the pumpkin to shrivel in areas where the temperatures are still warm. This makes a shaded area on the porch the best place to display your creation once it is carved.

Those living in colder climates need to be more concerned about overnight temperatures. Freezing nights can spell trouble for your jack-o’-lantern. Pumpkins thrive in cool and dry climates. Ideal weather conditions for outdoor display are temperatures in the upper 50s to low 60s with humidity levels that hover around 50%.

Bringing your work of art inside overnight or when it is raining will help to extend its lifespan. Better yet, keep your pumpkin inside and facing the window so that it is completely shielded from the elements. Just be sure to take extra precautions if you want to light them. This is when a battery-operated light is a better choice over a more dangerous open flame.

Tips to Ensure a Long Life for Your Jack-o’-lantern

In addition to paying attention to your local forecast and protecting your pumpkin accordingly, you can also extend its life by choosing a gourd that is free of bruises or soft spots. These types of blemishes are more likely to signal that the pumpkin will begin to rot quickly.

Agricultural experts also advise wiping the outside of a pumpkin with a diluted bleach solution before cutting into it. This bleach will work to kill lingering bacteria that are more likely to support decay. It is also a good idea to thoroughly scrape the sides and the bottom of the pumpkin with a large spoon to clean out all of its guts. Too many moist innards will bring about a faster rotting process.

You can also use a bleach and water solution to sterilize any leftover bacteria once you are done carving the gourd. Simply add one teaspoon of bleach for every quart of water. Put this mixture in a spray bottle and mist it over the pumpkin once per day. This easy practice will help the pumpkin to survive the week leading up to Halloween as it keeps harmful bacteria at bay.

Planning to feed your pumpkin to animals after the holiday? Swap out the harmful bleach for vegetable oil instead. You can also consider rubbing petroleum jelly over the edges of the carving to keep them moist and delay the drying process.

Keep in mind that even the best-kept pumpkins will only stay fresh for a few days once carved. This means that you will want to wait until the week of Halloween to make your spooky creation.
