Tropical Vacations You Can Actually Take During Hurricane Season

California and Hawaii
While Florida, the Gulf Coast, and the Carolinas are frequent targets of tropical storms and hurricanes during the fall, California and Hawaii are generally safe bets for travel in the U.S. There has only been one time in recorded history that a hurricane made a direct landfall in California. You have to go back to 1858 to find that event. In recent history, Tropical Storm Hilary came ashore in California in 2023. But these occurrences are a rarity.
Hurricanes are also rare in Hawaii. The island chain only covers about 6,400 miles across the massive Pacific, meaning that a storm has to head in a very specific direction to make contact. Most hurricanes that have come toward Hawaii from the Eastern Pacific have weakened into tropical storms or depressions before reaching the islands. The higher amounts of wind shear that circulate around the islands tend to put a lid on further development.
Costa Rica, Panama, and Uruguay
Portions of Central and South America are also typically lovely this time of the year. Both the Caribbean and the Pacific sides of Costa Rica are relatively protected from major hurricane threats. While the country sees the occasional flooding event, you can usually count on pleasant weather in the fall.
Panama's southern location also makes it less vulnerable to tropical weather. This nation has only recorded one tropical storm over the last five decades, making it a great destination if you do not want to worry about these conditions.
Like Panama, Uruguay is located far enough south of the equator to make hurricane impacts extremely unlikely. Although the South American country has seen its fair share of subtropical weather, the odds are low that you will be dealing with a major threat.
United Arab Emirates
For a destination that is truly out of the box, consider a trip to the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Situated in the Persian Gulf, the UAE has never recorded a hurricane in its history. Major tropical weather events, known as cyclones in this part of the world, typically strike neighboring Oman. UAE's most popular tourist spot, Dubai, is not adjacent to the hotbed of activity in the Gulf of Oman.
Trinidad and Tobago
Although the Caribbean has a well-earned reputation for being flush with tropical weather activity in September and October, there are some spots that are located outside of the traditional hurricane belt. Trinidad and Tobago are both good choices. Like Panama and Uruguay, the southern location of these two islands makes them less vulnerable to tropical weather.
The pair of islands is located just off the coast of Venezuela. Only a few tropical storms have unleashed impacts on this duo within the last 100 years across the Caribbean nation.
