What Could Go Wrong on the Fourth — and How to Stay Safe

There’s no better way to celebrate the freedoms Americans are offered than a gathering of family and friends. With great food, camaraderie, and a day or two away from the office, there’s a lot to look forward to.

As people are wishing each other a happy Fourth of July this weekend, it’s important not to get lost in the clinking bottles, fired-up grills, and spectacular fireworks shows. With just an ounce of precaution, there can be a lot more fun to go around.

Inspect Your Grill Before You Light It

Let’s start with the star of any July 4th celebration. Before you host a neighborhood barbecue, make sure your grill is in tip-top shape.

Give it a thorough cleaning, especially if you don’t use it regularly. All those little buildups of grease and charred food can spark small flare-ups and fires. If you use a gas grill, make sure all your connections are secure to avoid dangerous leaks or other hazards.

Check the Location of Your Grill

This probably isn’t your first rodeo, in terms of barbecuing. But, just remember that location matters in case you need to move the grill for any reason. It always needs plenty of ventilation, whether it’s gas or charcoal.

Keep your barbecue away from the home as much as possible, as well as deck railings and any overhanging branches from trees or shrubbery.

Be sure to check your local weather news beforehand, as well, to make sure grilling is even an option during the day.

Operate Your Grill Safely

Once you’re well-cleaned and in position, it’s time to light ā€˜er up. When lighting a gas grill, open the lid before turning on the gas to prevent buildup. Buildup would be especially dangerous if you had grease and other debris on the grill, as well.

Purchase a manual lighter, rather than matches, so you can have a bit more distance between your hand and the open heat source.

Always keep an eye on your barbecue, the entire time it’s operating. Monitor the heat and food, and don’t leave anything unattended for too long.

Finally, when it’s time to serve, don’t be afraid to use a thermometer to make sure those medium-rare meats are fully cooked through. And always avoid cross-contamination between raw and cooked meats.

Handle Fireworks With Care

Onto the more dangerous elements that require the most 4th of July safety tips. First and foremost, only purchase from reputable sellers so you can be sure they’re legal. Second to that, you’ll want to make sure fireworks are even legal in your particular city or town.

Do your research and check the reviews to see where you can make a purchase in your area from a reputable seller. Never purchase homemade fireworks. They’re incredibly unstable, can explode at any time, and can cause major harm to everyone around, up to and including death.

Read the Instructions — People Lose Fingers When They Don't

It sounds like common sense, but fireworks are one of the things in life that need to be studied carefully before handling. Watch YouTube videos; do your due diligence. And, as you research Fourth of July events near me, stay away from any that seem to be run by amateurs.

Unfortunately, there are plenty of news stories out there about people who have lost fingers and entire hands because they didn’t read the instructions carefully to avoid a devastating fireworks accident.

Dispose of Fireworks Properly

Especially in an age where wildfires are more prevalent, it’s essential to make sure they’re fully burned out before disposing of them.

If the fireworks are fully burned out, douse them in water before placing them into a metal receptacle of some kind. Always keep in mind that they’re combustible and can easily start a fire with just a small spark.

Beat the Heat Before It Beats You

Early 4th of July forecasts are calling for a mixed bag of conditions.

To keep your body from overheating, be sure to stay fully hydrated throughout the day. Unfortunately, alcohol and fireworks don’t mix for a multitude of reasons. But, alcohol also dehydrates us when we’re trying to remain cool.

Wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing wherever possible. A wide brimmed hat and sunglasses can also aid in the battle against the sun. Cooling towels and small hand fans are also helpful.

If someone you know has a pool, or you can move the party to the beach or the lake, that’s another great way to keep body temperatures down, especially if July 4 is set to be hot in your area.

Finally, don’t neglect your sunscreen during the day and bug spray at night when pesky mosquitoes come out to pester people. Here’s more on the importance of proven skincare in the summer.

Stay Smart and Have a Great Fourth

There you have it! There’s absolutely no need to avoid all the fun and excitement as you plan for a happy fourth of July this weekend. Just be sure to play it safe, especially if you have children nearby or plan to have alcohol on site.
