World-Renowned Mountaineer Nirmal Purja Dies in Pakistan Avalanche
Famed mountaineer Nirmal Purja's body has been located. The climber died after an avalanche roared down the Karakoram mountain range in Pakistan last week as he was leading an expedition. Here is the latest on this disaster, the rescue efforts, and Purja's legacy.
Avalanche Blamed on Deaths of at Least 8 Climbers
The mountaineering world is mourning the loss of a legendary climber. Nirmal Purja was known for his ability to lead climbing groups to some of the world's highest peaks. Purja lost his life last week when a landslide tumbled down the Karakoram mountain range, killing him and at least seven others.
While rescuers have located the body of Purja and some of the other ill-fated climbers, they have not yet been brought back to base camp. According to the Alpine Club of Pakistan, two climbers out of the initial group of 10 are still missing.
Rescuer Sirbaz Khan told CNN on Monday that the conditions remain dangerous. Khan said that "Two or three avalanches have come every day as we look for the bodies." Khan is an expert in all things mountaineering in the nation of Pakistan, carrying the title of being the first Pakistani to summit all of the region's peaks over 26,300 feet without the use of supplementary oxygen.
The rescue mission that Khan led was his 20th time going up Broad Peak. He was visibly upset speaking with the media when he noted that his neighbor and student was among the group that died on the mountain. Khan detailed that rescuers will likely need to drop a long rope from a helicopter to bring the bodies back home.
In addition to Purja, the confirmed fatalities include Omani climber Nadhira Al Harthy, Nepali climber Pur Bahadur Gurung “Yukta,” and U.S. climber Sarah Mallory Geis. Several sherpas and expedition teams set out to help the rescuers over the weekend after weather forced a temporary suspension of the search for the missing climbers.
About the Dangerous and Unpredictable Region
Nestled along the western flank of the Himalayas, the Karakoram range has a bad reputation for its unpredictable weather. The tumultuous conditions are often responsible for triggering rockslides and avalanches during the short summer climbing season window. The Karakoram Mountains boast four peaks towering over 26,000 feet, including the famous K2. The best weather for scaling these peaks is between July 15 and July 30. As it is now outside of this window, the conditions are becoming more dangerous to complete the rescue mission.
Purja held several world records for climbing endurance. The former British army soldier made history in 2019 when he climbed all of the world's 14 peaks measuring over 26,300 feet in a period of just over six months.
