As of April 2025, 16,380 wildfires scorched over 800,000 acres of land in the United States alone. U.S. Forest Service scientists discovered that wildfire season is getting longer, beginning in early spring and extending into late autumn. From 2001-2023, the same group reported a substantial 60% increase in global carbon emissions driven by wildfire activity.

By studying data over the past 20 years, NASA scientists discovered that 'extreme wildfires have become more frequent, more intense, and larger.' The most substantial increase in wildfire activity was observed in the boreal forests of northern America and the conifer forests in the west, affecting rural, urban, and suburban communities throughout the country.

The wildfire threat remains at an all-time high, and millions of Americans have already felt the impact. Emerging research reveals the hidden dangers lurking within the aftermath of scorched communities. Areas that may seem safe following wildfire extermination are now grappling with long-term health risks that linger long after the flames die out.

Toxic Dangers Lurking in Homes After Wildfires

Joseph Allen, director of the Harvard Healthy Buildings Program, said, “There’s a general misperception that after the flames go out, the hazard has gone away.”

Post-fire homes are littered with hazards not visible to the naked eye. Surfaces and air within fire-scorched communities may contain toxic materials such as:

  • Lead

  • Mercury

  • Asbestos

  • Chemicals from household products

  • Other heavy metals

These materials are released into the air, fusing with ash and debris as structures burn. They are often not captured by those monitoring regional air quality. Inhaling or handling these materials without proper protection can pose significant health risks. Moreover, the risk is not limited to the burned area as ash, soot, and other pollutants can be resuspended by the wind and carried for miles.

What Exactly is in the Air?

Wildfires do not pick and choose what they destroy. As the frequency of fires in urban communities increases, electronics, plastics, furniture, paints, vehicles, homes, and everything within or surrounding them can be incinerated.

When these human-made materials burn, they release a complex chemical cocktail, some of which are known carcinogens:

  • Volatile organic compounds (VOC)

  • Heavy metals

  • Benzene

  • Dioxins

Another airborne post-fire risk comes from a delicate particulate matter called PM2.5. These tiny particles are less than 2.5 micrometers wide and often saturate the air following emissions from burned oil, diesel, gasoline, and treated wood. PM2.5 is inherently dangerous due to its ability to bypass the natural defenses within the body and enter the bloodstream.

Subsequent smoke and ash from urban fires can flow beneath doors, around windows, and into nearby homes and commercial structures carrying these harmful chemicals that absorb into walls, furniture, carpets, and other porous items. Affected materials will be off-gas for weeks after the fire is extinguished, meaning the affected materials gradually emit those chemicals back into the indoor air.

Health Risks from Post-Fire Toxins

According to environmental health experts, exposure to the complex pollutants produced by wildfires can lead to:

  • Throat, eyes, and nose irritation

  • Persistent coughing and wheezing

  • Enhanced risk of heart attacks

  • Aggravated asthma and lung disease

  • Reduced heart and lung function

Although these residues are invisible, experts emphasize that they remain biologically active and toxic. Reports from residents of seemingly unaffected homes commonly declare symptoms such as fatigue, headaches, and respiratory irritation after returning home.

Those at the highest risk for adverse effects of exposure include older adults, children, people with preexisting heart or respiratory conditions, and pregnant women.

Mitigation Strategies for Homeowners

Home cleaning after wildfires requires washing all surfaces, including walls, ceilings, inside closets, and vacuuming or laundering all soft items.

  1. Wear Protective Gear: heavy-duty gloves, N95, KN95, or FFP2 mask, goggles, closed-toe shoes, long-sleeved shirt, and full-length pants.

  2. Minimize Airborne Ash Exposure: avoid using vacuum cleaners and leaf blowers— lightly mist surfaces with water before sweeping or dusting to keep the debris down.

  3. Use an Air Purifier

  4. Seal Ash and Debris in Plastic Bags: placing ash into bags before disposing of it in the trash can help contain harmful particles.

  5. Dispose of food and monitor water quality alerts: Follow food and water safety guidelines issued by local authorities.

The aftermath of wildfires poses significant health risks due to lingering toxic substances in homes that survived the flames. Homeowners must be vigilant in assessing and mitigating these dangers to ensure their living environments are safe.
