All Eyes on the New Guy: Diggs’ Wild Start in New England
When the Patriots signed Stefon Diggs this spring, it felt like a desperation signing. Far from the best available option when free agency opened up, he ended up being the best that would say yes to New England.
Their receiving corps finished dead last in passing yards last season, and their top pass-catcher was tight end Hunter Henry with 674 yards. Thatâs just not going to cut it.
So giving Diggs three years and $69 million checked out. You were getting someone who could walk into that receiver room and raise the standard. A guy who knows what âopenâ actually looks like and can show that to the young guys like Kayshon Boutte.
But instead of talking about Diggsâ impact on the field, weâre here talking about a boat party. A video surfaced from Memorial Day weekend showing Diggs on a yacht, passing around some kind of pink powder and living it up with several women. Naturally, it went viral. And just like that, one of the most important players on the Patriotsâ roster was in the spotlight for all the wrong reasons.
Still an Alpha â Until the ACL
If you push aside the off-field noise and just look at the football part of this, itâs pretty clear why the Patriots made such a big bet on Stefon Diggs. The guy's track record speaks for itself:
2022 (Bills): 108 catches, 1,429 yards, 11 touchdowns. That was his career-best in yardage and one of the top seasons across the entire league.
2023 (Bills): 107 catches, 1,183 yards, 8 touchdowns. Still elite, even if the numbers dipped a bit, and it earned him his fourth straight Pro Bowl nod.
2024 (Texans): 47 catches, 496 yards, 3 touchdowns in just eight games before he tore his ACL in Week 8. And here's the kicker â his +0.26 EPA per target would've tied for the lead on the Patriots last season.
Even a banged-up Diggs still offers more juice than anything New England has had in years. He put up six straight 1,000-yard seasons before that knee injury, and the Patriots havenât had a single receiver crack that mark since 2019. Let that sink in.
This isnât just a "hope he returns to form" kind of signing. Even if Diggs is only 85% of what he was in his prime, thatâs still a massive upgrade over what this team has been trotting out there lately. They desperately needed a guy who could get open, make plays after the catch, and take pressure off a young quarterback. Thatâs why this move, risky or not, had to be made.
The Boat Video: Bad Optics, Worse Timing
Memorial Day Weekend is supposed to be a time to unwind â a little sun, some music, maybe a few Instagram stories that youâll regret later. For Stefon Diggs, though, the story turned into something bigger. A clip surfaced online showing him on a yacht, surrounded by women, passing around some sort of unidentified pink powder from a shiny silver packet. It wasnât exactly the kind of moment you expect from a guy being counted on to lead a young team, especially one with the kind of structure and discipline the Patriots like to project.
In the video, Diggs asked the women on board, âWhatâs my name?â and got a loud âDaddy!â in response. He corrected them â kind of â with a smirk and said, âMr. Make It Happen On a Boat.â Then he told them, âDonât take all of it⌠go have fun, but come back and see me soon.â Whether it was all in good fun or not, the video took off like wildfire.
Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel was asked about it the next day. He didnât call Diggs out directly â Vrabel rarely does that kind of thing in public â but he made it clear the team had seen the video and was aware of the situation. His message was simple: players need to make good decisions on and off the field.
Release Rumors Swirl â Then Fizzle
It didnât take long for the speculation to start swirling. Just a few hours after the video went viral, longtime Patriots radio voice Scott Zolak floated on air that the team might actually cut Diggs. âItâs not just the boat,â he said, hinting that there might be more going on behind the scenes. Thatâs all it took for the internet to take off running â social media lit up with theories, trade machine screenshots, and all the usual noise.
But those rumors got walked back just as quickly. NFL Networkâs Ian Rapoport, one of the most plugged-in voices around the league, came out and said the Patriots had âzero plansâ to release Diggs.
Diggs Returns to OTAs
On Monday, June 2, Stefon Diggs finally showed up for Patriots OTAs â knee brace and all. He jogged out onto the field looking like a guy who knew eyes were on him, but also like someone who wasnât going to let the noise define his day. The brace on his leg was hard to miss, but he moved with confidence. That alone was a good sign for a team that needs him badly.
Diggs got involved right away. He was the first receiver through most drills, catching rhythm throws from rookie quarterback Drake Maye during routes-on-air and staying locked in on every rep. He didnât participate in the full-team 11-on-11 work â thatâs still a no-go as he rehabs the ACL â but he didnât just coast through the day either.
Multiple beat writers noted how light he looked on his feet, and more importantly, how vocal he was from the sideline. He was talking through route concepts with teammates, cheering guys on, and making sure his presence was felt even when he wasnât running every rep.
Josh McDaniels, back in the OC chair, didnât make much of Diggsâ earlier absence.
"It's a voluntary part of the year, we know that. I don't know if we have ever had perfect attendance at these things in general. As a coach, selfishly, you love it when they're all here because you feel like you have them all in the classroom and on the field and all the rest of it... I know he's staying up on the information and material and there's so many things and opportunities for us to teach all our guys going forward... I'm not concerned about Stef in that regard"
Culture Check: Can Vrabel Keep Everyone Aligned?
Vrabel spent eight seasons running the show in Tennessee, and he dealt with his fair share of strong personalities along the way. A.J. Brownâs public frustrations, Jeffery Simmonsâ drawn-out contract situation â none of it rattled him. Heâs got that no-nonsense style players tend to respect, but heâs also firm on what he expects: accountability.
Doesnât matter who you are or how much you make â if you're on his team, you follow the same rules as everyone else. And now, Diggsâ boat party is shaping up to be Vrabelâs first real test in Foxborough.
From whatâs been shared inside the building, Vrabelâs message to the locker room wasnât complicated: enjoy your time off, but when itâs time to work, be locked in. Heâs not out here trying to babysit grown men. He understands guys have personal lives, and heâs not trying to kill the fun. But he also knows this team is walking a fine line. They don't have much margin for error, especially when theyâre breaking in a rookie quarterback whoâs still adjusting to NFL speed and pressure.
If Diggs isnât all in â if he starts slipping into bad habits or becomes more distraction than contributor â it wonât just affect him. It could throw off the rhythm of an entire offense thatâs still trying to find its footing. And thatâs the kind of thing that can make or break a young quarterbackâs development.
The Spotlight Follows Stars â So Embrace It
Stefon Diggs didnât come to New England to quietly fit in â that much is clear. The good news is, at least for now, heâs back on the field. His knee seems to be on track, his contract is fully intact, and for now, all that release talk has died down. But this team needs more than attendance. They need impact. They need leadership. They need a guy who can not only make plays but hold the offense together when things get tough.
So now the Patriots and their fans are going to spend the rest of the summer wondering if Diggs can channel the same âMr. Make It Happenâ energy into game day and become the veteran cornerstone this offense desperately needs.
If the answer is yes, this team might surprise some people. If not? Well, Boston Harbor always has room for one more boat.
