Jermain Defoe names forward as Tottenham's main man after Leeds win

Tottenham Hotspur bounced back with a close 2-1 win over Leeds United in the Premier League on Saturday at the Elland Road.

Spurs were coming to this fixture after two consecutive draws against Bodo/Glimt in the Champions League and Wolves in the Premier League.

Before this, Tottenham's only win in the last four games came against Doncaster Rovers in the Carabao Cup. Other than that, they were struggling to secure wins from close games.

It was Mathys Tel, who scored the opening goal against Leeds, but Noah Okafor equalized for the hosts before the half time break.

Just when it looked like Spurs will settle for another draw, Mohammed Kudus came up with a second-half strike to seal all three points for Thomas Frank's men.

After the win, former Spurs striker Jermain Defoe admitted he is now a massive fan of Kudus, who has added a new dimension to this Tottenham attack.

The Ghanaian was on fire against Leeds as he provided the assist for Tel's goal and later scored the winner and Defoe was highly impressed by the former West Ham man.

“Oh, massive. I just felt like everything he did today, he was probably the main man. Every time his teammates got it, he was the one they looked at to try and create something," Defoe shared his thoughts on Kudus on Premier League Live quoted by Tottenham News

“Deserved the goal, he works hard for the team, he did his work back, but every time he lands on it, you just feel something is going to happen. Technically, he’s just so good and took his goal really well.”

Spurs fans will hope that after scoring his first goal for the North London outfit, Kudus will deliver more such performances in the upcoming games.

Who was the other Tottenham player who impressed Defoe?

While Kudus has been the most impressive summer signing for Spurs, there were doubts over Xavi Simons' ability after he moved to North London from RB Leipzig this summer.

The Dutchman was probably the most hyped signing for Spurs this summer and he hasn't lived up to such expectations.

Tottenham midfielder Xavi Simons

Simons has taken time to adapt in a new team and also in a new league, but he had a noteworthy game against Leeds and even Defoe was impressed as he labelled this as his best performances for Spurs.

He urged Frank to hand him more freedom just like he did against Leeds and feels that's how Simons will flourish for the Lilywhites.

"They created a few more chances, I just felt like at the top end of the pitch when you’ve got players you don’t need to coach, probably just let them go and play free," added Defoe.

"I think Xavi Simons had his best performance for Tottenham, where he could just roam and pick up those little pockets, receive it on the half turn, and players in and around have to try to make runs. I just thought he was fantastic."

Spurs are heading into the international break with a morale boosting win as they are also in the third spot in the Premier League points table only two points adrift of leaders Arsenal after seven games.
